Projects and preparation

 We have been busy the last several weeks! Our family was blessed to build a deck for my parents to raise funds for our trip, and we were lucky to have some beautiful weather. We have projects lined up to fund about 75% of our trip (that’s only 3 out of 4 family members!), so we are still praying for partners for about $2500.

We have also been preparing our hearts and minds for service. Two Bible verses we are memorizing are 1 Peter 3:15-“in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” And John 10:30-“I and the Father are one” (Jesus’ important claim to deity, and the important concept that there is one God and God is one).

I have also been enthralled by Lee Strobel’s “The Case for Christ” book, where he uses his legal and journalistic skills to examine leading experts from the fields of history, medicine, science, and philosophy about what the evidence actually points to. I highly recommend it for content, and it’s a really enjoyable read as well! ***More to come on that, and on reflecting on the resurrection. 


How has your family been getting time in the beautiful Spring weather? Has the pollen been bothering you? I have a layer of yellow on my car and in my lungs!

The first team fundraiser

When we get right down to it, this family service/ mission trip to Birmingham, England is going to cost us. It’s different than a family vacation—we could find a place to explore or relax, and while I’m confident my photos would be Instagram worthy, this is an entirely different kind of experience.  We believe there is value in going to the people groups gathered in Birmingham and delivering a message of worth and hope, and we feel so privileged to get to be a part of that! But it’s not a vacation. It’s not something we can or should do on our own. We are traveling with a team of 12, we are building a prayer/ support team (that’s you!), and we are raising funds with financial partners. Fundraising is an important part of trip preparation. In addition to the obvious--funding the costs of the trip--there is a mindfulness about it that prepares our hearts for the work ahead. Arriving

Today was tremendous… we left Atlanta last night a little after midnight (after a snafoo over Paul’s bag getting picked up by someone else at the security checkpoint!), but I don’t think either Adria or I got more than 4 hours sleep on the overnight flight, and I would be surprised if either of us had gotten as much as 2! Joe and Braelyn of course slept the whole way! But except for no sleep, the flight over went very well. From Heathrow it was the Underground tube to King’s Cross for a train to Birmingham… or at least that’s what we thought! After becoming thoroughly turned around by a case of “how do we get there from here,” we backtracked another tube station and ended up catching our train (all 12 of us running to the VERY LAST CAR Home Alone style) with literally :33 seconds to spare. Let’s Go, Birmingham!

Our family is excited to share that we have committed to a mission/ service trip this June to Birmingham, England! I am starting this blog as a way to share our preparation and adventure with you—our supporters, friends, and family!  My name is Beth, and I am wife to Joe, and mom to Braelyn and Adria. Adria and I, and Joe and Braelyn, were lucky to find each other a little over 10 years ago, and we blended our family nearly 8 years ago. Braelyn is a 14 year old 8th grader who plays tennis with her school, and loves also being a big sister to Mia and Sadie. Adria is a 13 year old 7th grader who also swims and runs track. Our family attends Concord Baptist Church in Clermont, GA, where both our girls have chosen to be baptized, and where Joe and I serve in the 4 year old room and with our MS/HS Student Ministry.
